How to Redact a PDF

Permanently removing sensitive information from a PDF is critical for privacy and compliance. Our draw-to-redact tool makes it easy to black out text, images, and data on any page.

1. Upload your PDF: Click the upload area or drag and drop your PDF file. The first page is rendered as a visual preview you can draw on.
2. Navigate to the target page: Use the page slider to move between pages. Each page is displayed at full resolution so you can precisely identify the content to redact.
3. Draw redaction rectangles: Click and drag on the page preview to draw black rectangles over the areas you want to redact. Each rectangle is drawn in real time so you can see exactly what it covers.
4. Undo mistakes: Use the Undo Last button to remove the most recent redaction rectangle. You can undo multiple times to correct any errors.
5. Download the redacted PDF: Click Download Redacted PDF. Permanent black rectangles are drawn onto the PDF at the exact positions you specified. The content underneath is irreversibly obscured.

Tips and Best Practices

• Draw slightly larger than the target: Make redaction rectangles a bit larger than the text or image to ensure complete coverage, accounting for any slight positioning differences.
• Check every page: Navigate through all pages of the document to ensure you have not missed any instances of the sensitive information.
• Verify the output: Open the downloaded redacted PDF and attempt to select or search for the redacted content to confirm it is truly removed.
• Redact before sharing: Always perform redaction as the final step before distributing the document to ensure nothing sensitive remains.
• Keep an unredacted backup: Store the original unredacted file securely in case you need to reference the complete content later.
• Use undo freely: If a rectangle is misplaced, use Undo Last immediately to remove it and redraw more precisely.

Technical Details

This tool uses PDF.js to render each page as a high-resolution canvas for the drawing interface, and the pdf-lib JavaScript library to apply the permanent redaction marks to the actual PDF document. When you draw rectangles on the preview, the coordinates are mapped from the screen canvas to the PDF page coordinate system. Upon download, opaque black rectangles are drawn directly onto each page's content stream at the mapped positions, permanently covering the underlying content. The redaction is irreversible in the output file because the black rectangles overwrite the visible layer. The entire process runs client-side in your browser using JavaScript with no server communication. Your PDF is read into memory, the redaction marks are applied, and the modified document is assembled for download. All data is freed from memory when you close the browser tab.
