Permanently removing sensitive information from a PDF is critical for privacy and compliance. Our draw-to-redact tool makes it easy to black out text, images, and data on any page.
Sharing documents often requires removing sensitive information before distribution. Social security numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, financial account details, medical information, and proprietary data must be permanently removed when documents are shared with unauthorized parties, published publicly, or submitted in response to information requests.
Simply covering text with a black shape in a word processor or using a highlight tool is not true redaction. Those methods often leave the underlying text intact in the PDF data, allowing anyone to copy, search, or extract the hidden content. Our tool draws opaque black rectangles directly onto the PDF page content, permanently obscuring the redacted areas in the output file.
Privacy and security are paramount when handling documents that require redaction. Our tool processes everything in your browser with no server uploads, so sensitive documents containing personal data, legal information, or classified content never leave your device. This client-side approach eliminates the risk of data exposure through server breaches or unauthorized access.
This tool uses PDF.js to render each page as a high-resolution canvas for the drawing interface, and the pdf-lib JavaScript library to apply the permanent redaction marks to the actual PDF document. When you draw rectangles on the preview, the coordinates are mapped from the screen canvas to the PDF page coordinate system. Upon download, opaque black rectangles are drawn directly onto each page's content stream at the mapped positions, permanently covering the underlying content. The redaction is irreversible in the output file because the black rectangles overwrite the visible layer. The entire process runs client-side in your browser using JavaScript with no server communication. Your PDF is read into memory, the redaction marks are applied, and the modified document is assembled for download. All data is freed from memory when you close the browser tab.
