Converting a Word document to PDF is essential for sharing files that look the same on every device and operating system. Our free converter handles the entire process within your browser, giving you full control over the output without uploading anything to a server. Here is how to use it.
Word documents are ideal for editing and collaboration, but they present significant challenges when it comes to distribution. A .docx file may render differently depending on the version of Word, the operating system, the installed fonts, and the screen resolution of the recipient. Formatting can shift, fonts can substitute, and page breaks can land in unexpected places. PDF eliminates all of these variables by embedding the exact layout into a fixed-format document.
Beyond visual consistency, PDF offers several practical advantages. PDFs are universally readable on virtually every device, from desktop computers to smartphones, without requiring any specific software. They are the standard format for professional document exchange in business, legal, academic, and government contexts. Many online submission systems exclusively accept PDF uploads. Additionally, PDFs cannot be accidentally edited by recipients, which protects the integrity of your content.
Our browser-based converter provides these benefits without the privacy tradeoff that comes with cloud-based services. Your business proposals, personal letters, academic papers, and confidential reports stay entirely on your device throughout the conversion process. There is no account to create, no file to upload, and no data retained after you close the tab.
The conversion pipeline uses two specialized JavaScript libraries running entirely in your browser. When you upload a .docx file, the mammoth library reads the Open XML structure that makes up the Word format. A .docx file is actually a ZIP archive containing XML files that describe document content, styles, relationships, and metadata. Mammoth parses these XML files and converts the content into clean, semantic HTML while preserving headings, paragraphs, lists, bold, italic, and other text formatting.
The rendered HTML preview allows you to inspect the converted content before generating the PDF. When you click download, jsPDF takes over. This library creates a PDF document programmatically, rendering the text content page by page according to your selected settings for page size, font size, and margins. It handles text wrapping, page breaks, and basic formatting to produce a clean, readable PDF output.
Because the entire process runs client-side in JavaScript, the conversion is both fast and completely private. There are no network requests during the conversion, no server-side processing, and no temporary file storage. Your document data exists only in your browser's memory during the session and is released when you navigate away or close the tab. This makes our tool suitable for sensitive and confidential documents that cannot be shared with third-party cloud services.
Upload a .docx file and the tool reads it directly in your browser using the mammoth library. It extracts the text content and formatting, shows you a preview, and then generates a PDF using jsPDF. No data is sent to any server.
The tool supports .docx files (Microsoft Word 2007 and later format). Older .doc files (Word 97-2003) may have limited support. For best results, save your document as .docx before converting.
Yes, 100%. The entire conversion happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your document is never uploaded to any server. Close the tab and the file is gone — nothing is stored.
Yes! You can adjust the page size (A4 or Letter), font size (8-24pt), and margins (5-40mm). The preview shows your document content before you download the PDF.
The tool preserves text content, headings, paragraphs, lists, and basic formatting. Complex features like custom fonts, embedded images, tables, and advanced layouts may be simplified in the PDF output.
Since processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device memory. Typical documents (up to a few MB) convert quickly. Very large documents with many images may take longer.
