PDF/A is an ISO-standardized subset of PDF (ISO 19005) designed specifically for the long-term digital preservation of documents. Unlike regular PDFs that may depend on external fonts, color profiles, or software features that could become unavailable over time, PDF/A documents are self-contained -- they include everything needed to reproduce the document identically decades or even centuries into the future. Our free converter adds the required PDF/A-1b compliance metadata to your existing PDF files.
Standard PDF files, while widely compatible today, are not guaranteed to remain readable in the distant future. They may reference external fonts that become unavailable, use proprietary features tied to specific software versions, or include elements like JavaScript or multimedia that future PDF readers may not support. PDF/A eliminates these risks by requiring that all resources needed to render the document are embedded within the file itself.
The need for PDF/A conversion is driven by real-world requirements across many industries. Courts and legal systems increasingly mandate PDF/A for filed documents to ensure they remain accessible as evidence for years or decades. Government agencies require PDF/A for official records and regulatory submissions. Universities demand PDF/A for theses and dissertations that will be stored in institutional repositories. Corporations use PDF/A for contracts, financial records, and compliance documentation that must be retained for legally mandated periods. In each case, PDF/A provides the assurance that the document will be readable regardless of what software, hardware, or operating systems exist in the future.
PDF/A is defined by the ISO 19005 standard, which has evolved through several versions. PDF/A-1 (ISO 19005-1:2005) is based on PDF 1.4 and is the most widely supported version. It comes in two conformance levels: Level B (basic) ensures visual reproducibility, while Level A (accessible) adds requirements for tagged document structure and Unicode character mapping. Later versions include PDF/A-2 (based on PDF 1.7, supporting JPEG2000 compression and transparency) and PDF/A-3 (allowing embedded files of any format).
Our tool adds PDF/A-1b compliance metadata to your PDF files. This includes XMP metadata with the PDF/A identification schema (specifying part 1, conformance level B), an sRGB ICC output intent for device-independent color reproduction, MarkInfo dictionary entries for document structure, and the required metadata stream with creation and modification dates. The PDF version is set to 1.4 to match the PDF/A-1 specification.
All processing is performed entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript and the pdf-lib library for PDF manipulation. Your files are never uploaded to any server -- the conversion happens in your browser's memory, and all data is discarded when you close the page. This privacy-first approach is particularly important for PDF/A conversion, as the documents being archived often contain sensitive legal, financial, medical, or personal information that must remain confidential.
PDF/A is an ISO-standardized format (ISO 19005) designed for long-term digital preservation of documents. It ensures documents remain readable regardless of software or hardware changes over time.
The tool adds PDF/A-1b identification metadata (XMP), sRGB output intent for color consistency, document structure markers (MarkInfo), required metadata fields, and sets the PDF version to 1.4.
This tool adds the structural metadata required by PDF/A-1b. However, full compliance also requires embedded fonts and no transparency, which may need a desktop tool like Adobe Acrobat for complete validation.
Yes, 100%. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server.
The tool targets PDF/A-1b (ISO 19005-1, Level B conformance), which is the most widely accepted and basic level of PDF/A compliance.
PDF/A is often required for legal documents, government filings, academic submissions, and corporate records retention. It ensures documents remain accessible for decades.
